Double Portion Blessing

Author : Paul Davis
The double portion blessing is an often misunderstood aspect of Scripture. Some ministers erroneously say they are releasing a double portion blessing upon someone during prayer. Yet unless there is a deep relationship between the two, it is highly unlikely that the recipient of prayer will ever walk in a double portion of their spirit.En route to Elijah's liftoff and heavenly homecoming, Elijah told Elisha four times to stay behind and not to follow him further. Yet Elisha followed Elijah until the end. The two passed through four places: Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho and Jordan (2 Kings 2:1-8). Seeing the persistence of Elisha, Elijah asked Elisha what he could do for him (v. 9). Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit – a hard thing (v. 9-10). It was a hard thing in that receiving another man's spirit is not easy. It requires interaction, seeing eye to eye, and walking within the confines and perimeters of the ministerial office. The mechanics of ministry, the guidelines for properly and effectively functioning in the ministry, and the heavenly vision all need to be transferred before the predecessor's departure. Going onward, Elijah and Elisha talked (v. 11). The final requirement was that Elisha was to keep his eyes on Elijah, without which he would have missed his blessing. Do away with and minimize your number of daily distractions. In the twinkling of an eye, when Elijah went up to heaven in a chariot of fire, Elisha cried goodbye to his spiritual father and caught his ministerial mantel (v. 11-14). Experimenting with the mantle of Elijah, Elisha progressively became comfortable with it and eventually performed twice as many miracles throughout his ministry as Elijah had performed. Indeed, the fire was transferred and the disciples multiplied through Elisha. As Jesus instructed His disciples to "Watch and pray," we likewise must remember that some things are not taught but rather caught through association and relationship. This is why Elijah's sermon material was not sufficient for Elisha to catch his spirit. Elisha had to keep his eyes continually on Elijah and "see" him go up at the time of his earthly departure. The above excerpt has been taken from Paul Davis' book "Holy Ghost Fire or Hellfire?
