One of my favorite songs at church paints the picture of God singing over me. That picture has always seemed sweet to me but also a bit unreachable. Is God singing a love song over me? It certainly is not a worship tune nor a southern gospel knee-slapping song. What sort of song would God sing over me?Sure, He does sing love songs over us (I suppose so) and most of us have the picture of God singing a song to us that would sound like one of our worship tunes and sung in a nice and Godly manner—or at least in a nice sweet tone of voice.However, the picture that the Hebrew word paints here is much different than singing what the Beatles would call a silly love song. The picture painted here is one of someone belting out a cry of encouragement, rejoicing loudly, and yelling with gladness and joy.While God may sing gently and sweetly over us, the phrase in Zephaniah 3:17 shows God yelling out encouragement on the behalf of a very discouraged nation (just read the first 8-verses).That just does not sound like a calm worship song over us does it?It sounds like a thunderous guitar rift in the midst of a painful event or a raucous drum solo that stirs us up out of our depression and into our true identity. It sounds like an electrifying call to remember Whose we are and where we belong in life.When you make it clear of life's obstacles He gives out a thunderous shout of excitement like a Father in the stands of a football stadium when His quarterback son shrugs off a tackler and runs in for the touch down. "YOU GO BOY!"When sin has you in a head lock and you wrestle free of its grip, pin it to the ground and break both of its arms He balls up His fist and begins to pump it in the air with a guttural cry of "YEAH! FINISH HIM OFF SON!"When you dance with the soccer ball down the middle of the field, dogging defenders and keeping control in a tense situation He is the One screaming at the top of His lungs words of encouragement…excited that you are His and He is yours. "YOU CAN DO IT!"God is way too big to be only found in a church service, in a worship tune, in our theology, or in our religious activities.God is found in the middle of life cheering us on with the glee of a Father who is excited to see His children in the game.
