"Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness"- Chinese proverb.We all experience 'the darkness' at times in our lives. Times of ill health, times of depression, times when lady luck has ceased to smile at us, lack of funds, frustration at not being able to do the things we desire to do or to have the things we want. There are times when we turn a corner quite expecting to find our wishes fulfilled, only to find frustration and emptiness. In love, in career, in ambitions, in so many ways our hopes and dreams get crushed and we experience 'the darkness'.The first thing to realise about the darkness is that YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN EXPERIENCING IT. To a greater or lesser degree, every human being experiences times of darkness. Some spend much of their lives in that darkness. Some spend very little time there. But all go there sometime or other. The darkness is a natural part of the human condition.The second thing to realise about the darkness is that it can be a great learning place and a place to grown. Mushrooms need the darkness to grow; photographic negatives need the darkness to develop. YOU need the darkness sometimes to show up the areas in your life that need growth and development, that need your attention to work upon.The third thing to realise about the darkness is that YOU ARE IN CONTROL as to how long it needs to last. You are not a victim of fate. but you can be a victim of your own history. As the proverb indicates, you have a choice. Light a candle OR curse the darkness. Which will you choose? And believe me, it IS a choice and the choice is yours.So many people go through the darkness and through a large part of their lives not only IN the darkness but KICKING OUT AGAINST the darkness, cursing it. They do not realise that the darkness can be a blessing to them if only they will LIGHT A CANDLE.What happens when you light a candle? THE DARKNESS BECOMES LESS. A candle is not a spotlight or a floodlight. It does not completely banish the darkness. But it enables you to see a little way ahead of where you are. It shows you that the darkness is not total, that the darkness, if it is your foe, cannot win. It shows that you can win through IF YOU HAVE VISION. The Bible says: "Without a vision the people perish". Without vision you have no chance of proper and sustainable survival. If a small light can give you some vision in the darkness in which you find yourself, then you can have faith to make your candle grow and to indeed transform it into a SPOTLIGHT to see some places clearer and eventually a FLOODLIGHT to illuminate the entire surroundings and BANNISH THE DARKNESS.Now we need to realise that lighting a candle does not automatically make the problems in your life disappear. It may start a process which eventually may achieve that. The candle is about vision. And vision is faith. You need faith to survive. You need faith to start the transformation of your situation, which will lead to the banishing of the darkness. With vision and faith you may get insights and glimpses of what to do. Certainly when you light that candle you are telling yourself that THE DARKNESS CANNOT WIN!
