Unfortunately society has subliminally defined success for all of us without us even being aware of it. All you need to do is look at any commercial, listen to any radio advertisement or read the newspaper and you will see what I'm talking about. Ads for bigger cars, more money, exotic vacations, high priced clothing and the ads go on and on. Families suffer the most because Americans get caught up in 'Bigger is Better' and continue to grow their lifestyle well before they can afford it, then the inevitable happens, they need a second income, children end up in day care and you know the rest of the story…..it doesn't end well and that's a whole other topic.Stop the NonsenseEvery person should take some time and decide what success means to them, and I'm not just talking about a passing thought, take a month to figure it out. Spend 4 hours a week for a month and decide (with your spouse, if applicable) what you want your life to look like. Be specific and detailed about the areas you are looking at, from family vacations to how many times you eat out, otherwise in a few weeks you'll get caught in the same game all over again. What's the Big Deal? The big deal is that so many people are star struck, trying to keep up with the Jones or what they have been fed about success, they never really know what they're looking for. Take a look around at the people you meet daily, you will see very few genuinely happy people (Regardless of what they drive or where they live), I believe it's because they are caught in this cycle of wanting the newest, biggest and best that's on the market. The sad truth is by the end of their life they will have missed so many opportunities to have been their for their children or friends because they were to busy acquiring stuff, stuff that after a couple of weeks is ignored like a new movie you just saw.To RecapFirst, grab your calendar and set a specific day/days and the exact hour you will sit down with your spouse and 'decide' what success means to you. There are a series of question in my Goals for Life book that will help you discover what's important to you.Second, after answering the questions, you'll need to figure out how you can immediately make changes (some people hate that word, if you are one of them fight through it) and set a specific date that you will start to implement them. The key is to have a plan, start slow and realize it might take you a couple of years to complete your "Success Makeover".Third, stay focused on the end result of 'your' success and how much you and your family will benefit and enjoy the success you have created. The joy comes from designing and living your dream not the one you're fed on a daily basis by the media and big business that is robbing you of your life. Whew that almost sounds like I have an issue there ( I probably do).Fourth, get and stay fired up, you can do this by following your plan that you have designed, remind your spouse and children of the family plan to keep everybody on the same page.
