Letters to Santa Claus...where do they actually go?

In anticipation of the most magical time of year, a child poetically articulates on paper exactly what she wants for Christmas, pleading her case as to why she overwhelmingly deserves everything for which she is asking. Then, with the greatest of care, she places her magical letter into an envelope, writes "To Santa Claus" on the face, attaches the postage stamp Mom gave her to use, and carries it to the mailbox. Then, of course, the mail carrier grabs the letter and off it goes.

Well, to little Abigail who wrote the letter, there is no question as to where the letter is heading...Santa Claus, of course. But would you be surprised if I told you that little Abigail is most likely exactly right?

It was 1852 and the Christmas Eve church service had just concluded. Being that the whole town was present, it was a good time to hold the final town meeting of the year. You see, for years, this small town in Spencer County of southern Indiana, founded in the late 1840"s, had been known as the "nameless town." This was simply because the settlers, of mostly German descent, could not decide on a name.

All were gathered around the pot-bellied stove, including the children...although quiet and not really participating, were included in the most important town meetings. As the frustrating discussion of naming the town continued, a chilly December gust blew open the wooden doors of this small log church, and it was the adults who fell silent as the youngsters came to life. With a magical scene of snowflakes glistening on black velvet, mysterious sleigh bells were heard through the picture-framed doorway. It was then the children, almost in one, simultaneous voice exclaimed, "Santa Claus, it"s Santa Claus!"

It was so...one Christmas Eve, over 150 years ago, the little nameless town finally got its name. Santa Claus, Indiana as it is still named to this day.

As you may have guessed, this small town of just over 2,000 residents is all about Christmas. From the town"s name to the names on the street signs, as well as witnessing the town"s village dcor, the holiday spirit year-round is very evident.

Each and every Christmas season, hundreds of thousands of letters arrive at the town"s small post office. In fact, this post office handles more mail, many times over, during the holidays than it does all other months combined! These letters, often inscribed in crayon but with the utmost sincerity, have but one name addressed on the envelope"s face. Yeah, you guessed it...Santa Claus.

So, this holiday season when your child or grandchild asks you for a postage stamp so that they can mail their heart-felt message to Santa Claus, you can honestly agree that their letters will most likely find its intended destination...

The most recognizable and triumphant periods in the comic books era were: the Golden age, Silver age and the Bronze Age. We've all heard of the saying, "what goes up must come down." This seemed to apply to the comics industry as well because it didn't only come down in the mid 1990s, but it came down with a crash.Lately the comic book industry has been trying to pick itself up through the aid of comic 2 films. This approach has proved to be helpful for titles like Spiderman, X-men, and Sin City in sales but it may have been hurtful for other titles that flopped in the Box office. That is why this is not enough to bring redemption to the industry. One of the problems that led to the downfall of the comics industry was said to be accessibility due to the removal of comics from stores and shops. This can no longer be true for the reason that comics are getting exposure through animations, movies, and the internet. Then why is this industry still struggling? I'll ask another question, why is anime doing so well? The simple answer is better storyline and the fact that it is made for a broader audience. As long as comics are seen as a kid thing, or for the unintelligent, it would be hard for major growth in the American industry.In the past, there were a lot of criticisms about comics making the readers delinquent and depreciating their reading abilities. These criticisms resulted in drafting of the comic codes. Parents believed the claims and criticisms made toward comics and were not elated about their children reading these "picture books." I intentionally wrote "picture books" because picture books are related to little kids learning how to read.Many of us read comics when we were kids, but when we hit fourteen we are feeling closer to adulthood. We're teenagers, young adults. This meant anything synonymous to children had to go, including our comics. We even played the hide the comic book inside another schoolbook trick, going as far as to dis comic books in front of all our friends, to make sure that no one associated us with such "childish things".Some of you may have experienced looking at comic books at a store ready to purchase, when one of your friends walk into the store. You're now trying to hide the comic book behind your back and talk to her as calmly as possible, praying that she doesn't see this comic book you're hiding. You greet each other and chat a little. You now begin to think of all the possible excuses you could give to explain why you're holding a super friends comic book in 2006. Bingo! You've got an idea, so you confidently begin to explain to her, "Oh this thing, my little brother likes to read this piece of trash." Fortunately for you she believed it and your reputation is safe.Let's be real, if we saw anyone around the age of seventeen to fifty reading comics we would think to ourselves, "Isn't he to old for that?" This grown man may be a genius or even a great athlete, but if he picks up a comic book, he's just another unintelligent geek. The whole point I'm trying to make is comics and adults don't mix in our society. As I mentioned earlier, it is because of the perception created about comics. Theories like comic-books are picture books for little children or comics make readers delinquent and reduce their reading abilities helped build the perception. And neither has been proven.If anything, comic books are helpful to readers because it is a form of story telling. The pictures only help one capture the story being told, leading to the creation of a visible scene. Having a credit card has become the norm in todays society. If you have a flippant attitude and dont use your credit card in the correct manner then you could unwittingly become deep in debt without realizing it or the implications. Looking at ways in which you can get the best use out of your credit card and keeping your spending under control may be key factors in reducing your chances of having unmanageable debt.

Paying On Time

Probably the most important thing is that you pay your bill on time, if you dont you will incur a late payment charge and have the added interest on top of your original payment. Paying the full amount of your balance every month, if you can, will prevent the cost of interest, meaning you only pay what you have spent. If you cant make the payment in full then at least paying the minimum payment is advisable but will cost you on interest the following month. If you repeatedly only pay the minimum payment every month and are still spending on your credit card you will soon find out that you seem to be getting nowhere in reducing your balance. Some credit card lenders include a minimum payment warning on their credit card statements. Do not ignore your bills. Ignoring your bills will only make your situation worse. If you are struggling to pay off your debt contacting your credit card provider to come to an agreement on paying the outstanding balance will help you get back on track.

Only Spend The Absolute Minimum

Keep youre spending to a minimum and only use your credit card for things that you need. This will help keep your debt down. Only spend what you can afford to pay back as having a credit card does not mean you have extra money it only means you can obtain and pay for things a little sooner than you would if you had to save up the money.

Avoid Cash Advances

It may be a bad idea to use your credit card to obtain money form a cash machine as this will undoubtedly mean you will be charged a higher interest rate increasing your debt further. It is too easy to think that using your card in this way is likened to having money sitting in your bank account. The reality is that it is not and you are obtaining money that you dont have. Never be tempted to use your credit card for impulse buys as you generally think about the implications after the purchase has been made.

What is Your Budget?

Have a budget and try only to spend what you can afford to pay back every month. Take responsibility for what you spend and you can have hassle free spending using your credit card without the unmanageable debt.

Hollywood Movie Stars Support Eco-Terrorism

Some have said that Hollywood Movie Stars are supporting Eco-Terrorists by donating to certain environmental groups. In fact some say that these movie stars may actually know where the money will eventually end up but donate anyway, as it shows their Hollywood support of the liberal viewpoint and is worth a few brownie points in the high-society circles in which they travel and need to be seen in. Recently a few online think tank forum think tankers discussed this notion and one had commented and stated:"I had an interesting thought about the environmental terrorist groups and wonder why they have never targeted Hollywood and the movie industry. It seems that they destroy so much stuff that just has to go to landfills in most movies and this one was no exception. I don't believe these groups have even raised one stink over this, hypocrites that they are."Well this is an interesting point indeed, why is it that Hollywood is never attacked or their on-site movies, which are often filmed in the wilderness? And the think tanker makes a good point, as the eco-terrorists start fires, which cause pollution and often destroy buildings, car dealerships and industrial type places which in turn put huge accumulations of debris and toxic gas into the air. This being extremely hypocritical as if you really cared about the environment you would never even think of such a thing. Another think tank member stated:"Well, that is liberal Hollywood for you, some of those actors and actresses actually believe in the Eco-terrorists causes and condone it. It is pitiful really. I think secretly although they will never admit it, that these movie folks are funding eco-terrorists giving money to groups which claim to support environmental endeavors. Of course if you arrest them for it, they will have all sorts of negative media and it will be another Waco Incident with the FBI."It is a really challenging issue, as sometimes you have to follow the money to find the bad guys and then you come across folks you would never suspect stuck in the middle and inadvertently funding the entire operation.
